Its name, «ça va l’bocal!», announces itself with energy: you can live zero waste whilst having fun! This is the key message that the three founders of this bulk store, which opened its doors in May 2017 on Rue de l ‘Hôpital 28 in Delémont, want to communicate. For Brigitte Bridel, Julie Hennemann et Aline Schindelholz, saving the planet is a priority. Their strategy to achieve this focuses not only on the reduction of waste from packaging, but also more widely on the promotion of local and organic products in store.
To this end, their store holds a wide assortment of products sold in bulk (flours, pastas, rice, cereals, grains, legumes, spices, oils, vinegards and mustard, to name a few) as well as beverages crafted by local artisans (beers, sirups and organic wine), and other essential ingredients for homemade personal care and cleaning products. Customers are invited to bring their own containers, but don’t be afraid if you’re still building up your own supply: the store has also reusable, locally handcrafted procucts on offer, like Sakeco produce bags made by Ateliers protégés jurassiens, a social enterprise that gives socio-professional support to handicapped adults.
The founders of ça va l’bocal! are looking to complement rather than compete with other local businesses: for example, their store does not sell fresh products, seeing as it is conveniently located right next to a market where these products are already sold in abundance. Additionally, the founders were sure to survey the region prior to developing their plans, and in doing so they identified that there were no similar offerings in the nearby area.
Ça va l’bocal! is not just a bulk store: it’s also an association that seeks to make zero waste living a thriving and interactive activity, mostly through inviting interested folks to meet and exchange ideas in workshops hosted on-site. All interested people can become members by signing up on the website or the Facebook page of the association (check out the links below). The founders also seek to develop new projects, notably a bicycle delivery service. This is just the beginning for ça va l’bocal!
