ZeroWaste Switzerland’s information and recipes, drawn from the personal experience of our volunteers and members, have been supplemented by expert advice and carefully checked.
Test
However, every home is different; the materials, appliances and cleaning accessories used are not the same. Dosage errors can also occur. So, when you make a product, we recommend you test it on a small surface or a small quantity (laundry, dishes) of clothes or dishes that are not very damaged, to check compatibility with your materials and equipment.
For cosmetics, apply a small amount of product to the crease of the elbow and wait 24 hours to check for any reaction.
Label
Homemade or bulk household products are still chemical products and must never be stored in food or confusing packaging. They must be labeled to avoid confusion, and stored out of reach of children.
Conservation
Products containing water (creams, emulsions) do not keep very long. They should be kept in a cool place and used within 2 weeks. If you wish to keep them longer, add a preservative and follow the supplier’s instructions.
Water-free products (powders, balms) keep well. The shelf life of balms depends on the shelf life of the oils they contain.
Protecting yourself
On the other hand, many of the ingredients used, such as vinegar, citric acid, soda crystals, soap, sodium percarbonate, etc., are irritating to the eyes, respiratory tract or skin. So, as with any household product, it’s important to use them with care and to protect yourself (gloves, goggles, good ventilation).
However, ZeroWaste Switzerland cannot be held liable for any damage or inconvenience resulting from their use.
Essential oils
The use of essential oils can present risks: it’s important to take precautions. Respect the dosage and get informed.
- People can be allergic to essential oils. Before using any on the skin, a skin test is performed on a small area.
- Not all essential oils can be used by pregnant women, children, people with health problems or those already taking medication.
- Some essential oils, particularly those derived from citrus fruits, are photosensitizing, so do not expose them to the sun directly after use.
- Not all essential oils are suitable for consumption or use on the skin. Similarly, not all essential oils can be used pure.
