(6. Ça mousse et ça décrasse)

7. Bien rincer la bouilloire

DIY Beeswrap

Zero Waste Utility

In the kitchen, there are often leftovers that you usually cover with cellophane film, like a muffin you want to take for coffee at the office or a sandwich to take away at lunch. The used plastic film thus ends up in the trash after use…

The principle of the beeswrap is to be able to wrap our food without creating waste, while using what we already have: an old cloth, an iron and beeswax, easy to find in pharmacies if you don’t have candle leftovers. Less waste and a nice DIY to offer to your loved ones!

What you need

  • A clean, dry piece of cloth – this can be a scrap of fabric, an old shirt etc., which can be used for upcycling here.
  • Beeswax, broken into small pieces.
  • An iron
  • Baking paper, which you can keep to use next time

Method

  1. Cut the fabric to the desired size.
  2. Cut the beeswax into small granules (see photo), if it is bought in pharmacies it is normally ready to use. Beeswax has antibacterial properties, so it is important not to use just any candle wax!
  3. Pre-heat the iron
  4. Place a piece of baking paper (slightly larger than the cloth) on an ironing board, put the cloth on it and spread the beeswax granules evenly on it.
  5. Place the 2nd piece of baking paper on top of your fabric, and gently iron; the wax will melt and integrate the fabric, making it waxy.
  6. Turn your cloth over (leaving the baking paper on) and iron on the other side.
  7. Add a little wax if necessary

Your beeswrap is ready!

Tricks

  • Wash your beeswrap in cold water with soap.
  • Avoid very hot foods as they can melt the wax.
  • If you need more wax, remelt it as described above.
  • For hygienic reasons, it is advisable not to use the same beeswrap over 1-2 years of age.

Dishwasher tablets

Having trouble finding natural dishwashing tablets? Try this do it yourself recipe! Those tablets can even be used for the toilet.

Equipement

  • Bowl
  • 1 tablespoon
  • Small silicone mould / egg container, basically a mould with small compartments

Ingredients

  • 200 g of citric acid powder
  • 200 g of sodium carbonate
  • 200 g of salt
  • 3 tablespoons of water

Cautionary note

Please read this information carefully !

Method

  • Add the citric acid powder, sodium carbonate and salt to a bowl and mix well. Depending on the moisture content of the sodium carbonate, it may react with the citric acid, so don’t panic.
  • Then add slowly and carefully the water and mix everything. After about 1 minute, the chemical reaction should be almost done.
  • Pour the mixture into a mould of the desired tablet size and press with a spoon.
  • Let it dry overnight.

Remarks

These tablets can also be placed in the toilet bowl. It is recommended to leave them overnight and the next day clean the toilet with the toilet brush.

Alternative: Make the mixture without adding water and store in an airtight container.

DIY for toilet cleaner

The bottom of your toilet has turned brown despite regular cleaning? Our trick will help you solve the problem.

What you need

  • Toilet brush
  • 1 tablespoon (TS)

Ingredients

  • Citric acid powder in a hermetically sealed container

Warning

Please read this information carefully !

Method

  • Pour 1 to 2 TS of citric acid in the bottom of the toilet and leave it on overnight. The next morning brush with the toilet brush. Repeat if necessary.

Remarks

Alternative with vinegar: Spray pure cleaning vinegar (possibly hot, it is more effective) on the inside of the bowl, leave for a few minutes, then brush.

DIY – How to make candles with leftover wax

Candles tend not to burn all the way to the end and often end up with wax residue at the bottom of the jar. Rather than throwing away these leftovers, we suggest that you collect these wax bases from several candles to make candles again, by upcycling. Less rubbish, less waste!

What you need

  • Wax residues
  • A glass or metal container (e.g. old glass jars, clean cans, whatever you can find)
  • A wick OR make your own wick with a small wooden stick

Method

  1. Prepare the wick: soak a small wooden stick in olive oil for 1 hour or use an already prepared wick.
  2. Shred any remaining wax to make mini shavings. The colour doesn’t matter, unless you want to have a single-coloured candle.
  3. Heat water for use as a water bath.
  4. Fill the container of your choice with the wax shavings to the brim and place it in the water bath. Slowly add a little wax, as it loses volume as it melts.
  5. Remove the container from the water bath once everything has melted and place the wick, wait for it to stop moving.

Your candle is ready ! The first time you light it, it may take a few seconds.

DIY for fabric softener

Did you know that making your own non-toxic fabric softener can be so easy and simple? Moreover, it is very effective.

What you need

  • 1 bottle of vinegar (1L)

Ingredients

  • 1 l of organic apple vinegar

Cautionary note

Please read this information carefully !

Method

  • Pour 1 small glass of vinegar into the fabric softener compartment and that’s it.

Remarks

Vinegar not only has a decalcifying effect, but it also disinfects and cleans the washing machine at the same time. This softener is also a highly recommended alternative for people with allergies and skin problems.

DIY for Washing Powder

Making your own laundry has many advantages: it’s very easy, economical, and ecological! Whether you are a beginner or a Zero Waste expert, doing your own laundry is useful and accessible to everyone!

What you need

  • Kitchen scale
  • Container with lid

Ingredients

  • 200 g of grated of flaked soap
  • 200 g of baking soda
  • 200 g of salt

Cautionary note

Please read this information carefully !

Method

  • Mix the finely grated soap or soap flakes with the baking soda and salt.

Remarks

Sodium carbonate can also be used here as an alternative to baking soda. However, it must be closed tightly, as it reacts with moisture in the air and tends to agglomerate. Laundry sodium carbonate is also much stronger and is therefore more suitable for heavily soiled clothes.

For whiter clothes: add 200g of sodium percarbonate.
To remove odours (tobacco, perspiration): add a small glass of baking soda directly into the drum.
For softer laundry: add 1 glass of vinegar in the softening compartment of the machine. Add lavender essential oil if you want the laundry to smell good (more effective than in laundry).
